Micha Abeles M.D. got his start in the medical field while he was in the U.S. Army. During his time in the force, Dr. Abeles served as a major and chief of the outpatient department at Ft. Monroe Virginia. He received recognition and praise for his outstanding clinical skills and his ability to boost moral in the unit. After leaving the force in 1976, Dr. Abeles started his career in rheumatology at the University of Connecticut Health Center as a fellow.
Proving himself an effective researcher and instructor, by 1978 he had been made an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology. Alongside his work as a faculty member, Micha Abeles M.D. coordinated the John Dempsey Hospital clinical clerkship program and worked as the chief of the Burgdorf Rheumatology Clinic. In 1980, he established a part-time private practice, treating patients as a rheumatologist.
In 1986, Micha Abeles M.D. became an associate professor of medicine, and was named associate director of the University of Connecticut Multipurpose Arthritis Center. He researched a variety of rheumatological conditions, and performed numerous clinical trials of new treatments that lead to the development of significant medications that are still in use today.
Over his career, Micha Abeles M.D. presented over 80 abstracts in regional and national meetings, authored numerous book chapters, and has authored or co-authored over 50 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. A few of the big discoveries Dr. Abeles and his co-authors made were “The Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis with Gold,” “Do Spray Coolant Anesthetics Contaminate an Aseptic Field?” and “Low Dose Methotrexate in Rheumatoid Arthritis.”
In addition to his research, Micha Abeles M.D. was associate director of an NIH funded Multipurpose Arthritis Center for 12 years, as well as director of the rheumatology clinical practice for the University of Connecticut Health Center. He served as chief of the division of rheumatology from 2007 to 2016. Named a full professor of medicine in 2010, he retired from the University in 2016.
Currently, Micha Abeles M.D. works full-time in his own private practice.
